Mandarin - Intermediate 4
Thursdays 7:45 PM -9:15 PM (ET)
Course Description
This is a standard class that meets once per week for 8 consecutive weeks: April 2 – May 21. This course finalizes the intermediate series (culminating in CEFR A2/HSK2 proficiency). Students tackle more sophisticated sentence patterns, such as double-object sentences to indicate giving or receiving (for example, giving someone a gift or being fined a sum of money). They also learn to make mild complaints or soften statements using phrases like “有点儿…” (“a bit too…”). The passive “被” construction is introduced to describe actions done to someone or something. Finally, students learn to talk about imminent changes or plans (using “...要...了” to say something is about to happen). By the end of the course, learners can communicate in Chinese with greater nuance across a variety of everyday contexts and are ready to advance to higher levels. Level: HSK2 / CEFR: A2 Topics: giving gifts, renting an apartment, holidays, making plans Objectives: double-object sentences, “极了" indicating degree, complex adjectives, the structure “ 如果 … • • • • 就 … • • •”, the reduplicate forms of the verb, the structure “因 … … 所 以 … •” particles indicating the future Textbook: New Concept Chinese 2, Lessons 31–40
